Melton Conaway JR

Melton Conaway Jr. was born on March 18, 1938, in Palestine, Texas — rooted in his community and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He lived his life to the fullest. Never a dull moment. Never a sad day.

A 1957 graduate of Blackshear High School in La Mesa, Texas, Melton was a standout athlete in baseball, basketball, and track. That same competitive spirit carried him through a full career in the oil and gas industry with Dowell — later Schlumberger — where he worked overseas, in Las Vegas, and across the country before retiring with pride.

Off the clock, the golf course was his sanctuary. A proud member of the Black Golfers Association, he competed in tournaments across the United States and never met a round he didn't love.

Above all else, he was a family man. Ten children. A generation of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The life of every party and the kind of man people just wanted to be around. On April 6, 2026, God called him home. A life fully lived. Not a dull moment to speak of. "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." — 2 Timothy 4:7
